Mehmooda’s Malawi Diary: Monday 28th October

Posted By Kirsty Dakin - 30th October 2024

Up at 1.30am. Leave at 2am. Drive an hour and half to Kwiputi School Malawi. Cook porridge for 1800 children.  Serve porridge. Visit classrooms. Meet the children.

There is no school on Sunday.  No school means no food.

Some children don’t eat from 6am Saturday until 6am Monday.

Over the last 3 days a group of 10 of us have visited 4 schools and madressas which provide education and food to under privileged children in Malawi.  We have seen almost 2800 students across the 4 schools.  The levels of underprivilege are so high that a cup of porridge provided by Charity Right and it’s donors and volunteers at 6am before the school day is the only meal that the majority of these children will have in a day.

It has been a privilege to support so many children who would otherwise go hungry.

The promise of food encourages children to come to school.  They eagerly start gathering as it gets light at 5.15am. Dressed in their uniforms they queue with their plastic cups waiting for 6am.

The team of volunteers and supporters who have come on this trip have all been truly humbled by the levels of deprivation.

A lollipop, a pack of bubbles, a back pack, pens and pencils, crayons and work books……we take these for granted.  The children of Malawi are overjoyed to receive these.

Thanks to everyone who has donated money, stationery, toys and the like.
