Cauda Equina Awareness

MDS CES Team

As we come up to Cauda Equina Awareness Day 2022, we reflect on another year of supporting clients who suffer with Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES).  This can be a devastating life changing condition, where the patient is left doubly incontinent, loses sexual function, loses the ability to walk and has to live with crippling pain, as a result of damage caused by disc compression at the bottom of their spine.  Sadly, we continue to see new cases every year, where missed opportunities to diagnose the condition and arrange surgery, lead to terrible outcomes for the patient.  That is why spreading awareness about CES is so essential.

A delay of a few hours can make all the difference, so it is important that people are aware of the RED FLAG symptoms.

The Cauda Equina Champions Charity do such a fantastic job in supporting people with CES and spreading awareness among the public and with healthcare professionals.  We are honoured to be on their trusted legal panel, of firms who specialise in this complex and often misunderstood condition.  We are passionate about fighting for our clients and we are constantly amazed by the courage, determination and resilience they show, making the best life they can for them and their families, despite extraordinary obstacles.

In 2022 our Daniel O’Keeffe began actively working on a new CES Pathway for patients of CES, with 3 hospital trusts in the north west of England.  The aim of this pathway  is to improve the speed at which suspected cases of CES proceed to MRI scanning and ultimately decompression surgery on the spine.  Just one less patient falling through the cracks and avoiding a devastating outcome would make it all worth while.

We eagerly await the launch of “The Lost Tribe” a book written by people who have CES, dealing with their experiences.  We are proud to have helped fund this project from The Cauda Equina Champions Charity, which will highlight the very real experiences of those living every day with CES.

We want to offer a huge congratulations to Claire Thornber and James Martin and to their colleges at The Cauda Equina Champions Charity, who have arranged lots of engaging, informative  and thought provoking sessions as part of their #CESAwareness22 campaign, climaxing on Saturday with National Cauda Equina Syndrome Awareness Day.   Our resolve is stronger than ever to fight for our clients and to spread awareness about CES and we look forward to working together with the Cauda Equina Champions Charity over the next 12 months.
