April is Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month #limblosslimbdifference #LLLAM Once a year Limb Loss and Limb Difference UK a collaboration of charities and support groups seek to raise awareness and educate about the challenges of living with limb loss and limb difference and the support provided by their charities throughout the UK to empower those within their community.
It is estimated that between 5000 and 6000 major limb amputations are carried out in the UK every year and around 1 million people are living with limb difference. Some amputations and limb disabilities are caused by substandard health care.
Living with limb loss or limb differences can be life changing for individuals and families. There are physical challenges such as relearning daily activities, learning how to adapt to new prosthetic devices and coping with pain. In addition, the emotional impact of loss, feelings of isolation, practical considerations such as returning to school, work, social activities, as well as managing finances and navigating the benefits system mean that clients often tell us it can all seem overwhelming.
Limb Loss and Difference UK seek to inform and educate with the goal of addressing these issues and promoting self-esteem and wellbeing.
