A joint investigation between Channel 4 News and The Independent has found that 46 babies born at the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust maternity services between 2010 and 2020 have suffered brain damage and 19 were stillborn. The investigation revealed evidence of poor care and repeated failures to properly investigate the babies’ deaths and in some cases, to refer them to the Coroner. An Inquest into the death of a baby who tragically died in September 2019, found that there were “gross failings” that contributed to her death. The court also heard that the maternity unit at Queen’s Medical Centre operated in a “fundamentally unsafe manner”.  The Trust’s Chief Executive apologised to the bereaved families and said that the Trust is making improvements to the maternity service a “top priority”.  We are shocked and saddened by the findings of the investigation and hope that as a result, the standard of maternity care in Nottingham has improved.
