Endometriosis is a condition where cells similar to those in the lining of the womb (uterus) grow in other parts of the body. This can cause pain, inflammation, scar tissue and often results in a huge impact on the life of a sufferer. 10% of women and those assigned female at birth, are affected by Endometriosis.
Signs and Symptoms of Endometriosis
Endometriosis is often found in areas around the womb, such as the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and lining of the pelvis.
The condition can sometimes affect organs, such as the bladder and bowel. Endometriosis can be found in areas outside the pelvis, such as in the chest, although this can be rare. Symptoms can occur when bleeding takes place during a period and cannot leave the body.
Symptoms can include:
- Painful periods that interfere with everyday life
- Heavy periods
- Pelvic pain
- Pain during or after sex
- Extreme tiredness
- Pain when having a bowel movement or passing urine
- Pain or bleeding in other areas (such as in chest)
- Difficulty getting pregnant
Treatment
Sometimes it can take a long time to diagnose the condition as symptoms can be similar to other conditions including adenomyosis and irritable bowel syndrome. This can have an impact on a person’s mental health. If you are concerned about any of the symptoms, it is important to see a doctor and get medical advice. Currently there is no cure for endometriosis.
Treatment can include medication such as painkillers, and other hormone treatment (contraceptive pill). If other treatments are not effective or the condition is widespread, surgery can be offered.
If you or someone you know is struggling, you can reach out to organisations, such as Endometriosis UK or local mental health services for support and guidance.
