My Week at Moosa-Duke Solicitors-It’s Not All Suits

Posted By Kirsty Dakin - 30th August 2022

I spent last week undertaking work experience at Moosa-Duke Solicitors.  It was a fantastic experience, that gave me a fascinating insight into the law.  They say there are two sides to every story, but something that stuck with me was that not everyone has the same ability and opportunity to speak and advocate for themselves. As an aspiring law student, I was further motivated by the commitment of the solicitors at Moosa-Duke to ensure that their clients voices are heard, as they seek to obtain truth and justice, following devastating outcomes in healthcare.

Reading through and analysing witness statements and taking notes of new enquiries, the human side of things really hit me.  Every lawyer at the firm seemed to appreciate that behind every case is a person, who is suffering from illness, injury and/or grief. I was inspired by their altruistic work ethic I saw at Moosa-Duke. I witnessed the solicitors treat each client with dignity, respect and compassion, in reassuring them that their voice had been heard and that they will be supported in investigating their case, which often relates to life changing injuries.

Listening into client meetings, reaffirmed to me how crucial the role of the solicitor is and the importance of getting good legal advice.  Seeing the emotional support really inspired me to feel that this is a career I want to go into.

My time at the firm gave me a great introduction into medical negligence law, which often unfairly attracts criticism in the media.  However,  what I witnessed was  individuals working diligently and attentively to bring about justice for their clients in the form of monetary compensation so that they can live as full and as normal a life as they can, despite catastrophic injuries. From what I witnessed at the firm, I saw the very best of the law, helping people get back on their feet and putting their lives back together.

Overall, my time at Moosa-Duke Solicitors was an eye-opening experience that has helped me to shed my ‘Law and Order’ or ‘Suits’ preconception of working at a law firm. However, the reality of what I saw was much more inspirational. Being immersed in such a warm, friendly and human atmosphere has made me more resolute that a career in the law would provide a stimulating and rewarding career, where I can make a real difference to my clients.
