World Cancer Day is observed every year all over the world on 4th February. The aims of the day are to:

  • Raise awareness about cancer.
  • Encourage its prevention.
  • Help to address the “global cancer epidemic”.

The first World Cancer Day was in the year 2000 and every year it is led by the Union for International Cancer Control.

There is a new theme for World Cancer Day in 2025, which will run to 2027. It is “United by Unique”. It recognises that cancer is a deeply personal experience, and there is a unique human story behind every diagnosis. The campaign will focus on a people-centred approach to cancer care because every story is different.

People who have been diagnosed with cancer are invited to share their stories to help and inspire and support other people with cancer, to give insight, to build awareness and overcome stigma. Stories have power, and so they also want to hear from the family members of people with cancer, medical professionals, and anyone else who has a story to tell. Click here to share your story as part of the World Cancer Day campaign.

There are charities that offer support to people who have been diagnosed with cancer and their families. Visit the Hope Against Cancer, Cancer Research UK and MacMillan Cancer Support websites for more information.

Quote from author, Gemma Lewis, Partner and Specialist Medical Negligence Solicitor from MDS, said “The sad truth is that all our lives will be touched by cancer at some point. There should be no stigma around cancer and people should be able to share their experiences without fear. The World Cancer Day campaign to unite people by their unique stories is a brilliant initiative.”
