National Mentoring Month’s 3 key goals are:
- To raise awareness of all the different types of mentoring;
- To inspire more people to become mentors, particularly younger people; and
- To advance the growth of mentoring by encouraging organisations to run mentoring programs for their people.
At MDS we recognise the role mentors can play in shaping lives and careers. Mentoring is about more than just giving advice. It’s a powerful relationship that provides guidance, support and encouragement which can potentially change the trajectory of someone’s career.
For many years we have been working with the University of Leicester Law School to provide mentors to students to share lessons from our journeys into law that might inspire or help someone else on theirs. We have found that mentoring creates a support network that fosters growth. It ensures that mentees feel seen, heard and are empowered. This ripple effect - we believe - helps to build a more inclusive and diverse industry for the future.
Steve Evans (Associate Professor, also practising solicitor and one of the careers tutors in Leicester Law School) says: “For many years now, MDS have helped our students in the law school by acting as informal mentors. And it has been particularly impressive to observe how that initial opportunity has often then led to a progression: starting with this mentoring, then at times leading to work experience opportunities, then employment opportunities and traineeships and ultimately employment as lawyers with the firm. MDS have played a very helpful part in the development of young lawyer’s careers, and mentoring at an early stage has been a key part of this. We, and our law students, are grateful for this continuing connection between a local Leicester Law firm and the local University.”
Hannah Carr, Legal Director and Specialist Medical Negligence Solicitor from MDS says: “Good mentors provide a safe space for questions and honest conversations and in doing so inspire action. Mentoring is very much a two-way street. It’s not just the mentee who benefits. Mentors often find they learn just as much from the relationship.”
