Winter viruses have started to appear, after mostly disappearing last year when people could not mix due to the Covid-19 lockdown. Doctors have advised that most infections are unlikely to be serious and that people should go to their GPs, pharmacies or NHS 111 as a first option. There is a concern that emergency departments could become overwhelmed. A paediatrician in Leicester reported that the emergency department at Leicester Royal Infirmary recently saw almost 300 patients in one day and that there are not enough staff to keep up with demand.
